About Robert Clark and Channel Islands Mortgage Services

Experience Matters. Relationships Matter More.

I’m Robert Clark, founder and president of Channel Islands Mortgage Services, an independent mortgage brokerage based in Ventura, California.

I began my mortgage career in October 1997. Over nearly three decades, I’ve helped guide thousands of transactions and countless individuals and families through some of the most important financial decisions of their lives.

I’ve worked for major financial institutions, served private banking and high-net-worth clients, navigated changing markets, and built a broad understanding of residential and commercial real estate finance. Today, I bring that experience to my own independent brokerage, where I can focus on what matters most: providing thoughtful advice, creative financing solutions, and personal service without the pressure of a large bank or call-center environment.

My job is not simply to quote an interest rate or complete a transaction. It is to help people understand their options, make informed decisions, and structure financing that supports their broader financial goals.

Why I Became an Independent Mortgage Broker

After many years working within large financial institutions, I wanted the freedom to serve clients differently.

As an independent mortgage broker, I am not limited to the products, underwriting guidelines, or pricing of a single bank. I can evaluate multiple lenders and loan programs to identify solutions that best fit each client’s circumstances.

That flexibility is especially valuable for borrowers whose financial lives do not fit neatly into a traditional lending box.

My areas of expertise include:

  • Conventional, jumbo, FHA, and VA home loans
  • First-time and move-up homebuyer financing
  • Self-employed and complex-income borrowers
  • Reverse mortgages and retirement lending strategies
  • Home equity lines of credit and second mortgages
  • Investment property and second-home financing
  • Commercial real estate loans
  • Bridge loans, private money, and alternative financing
  • Financing strategies for financial advisors, CPAs, attorneys, and their clients

Every borrower and every property is different. My role is to understand the entire picture before recommending a solution.

Education First. Pressure Never.

Mortgage financing can feel complicated, especially when people receive conflicting advice or are asked to make decisions quickly.

I believe clients deserve clear explanations, honest guidance, and enough information to make confident decisions.

Sometimes the best recommendation is to move forward. Sometimes it is to restructure the financing. And sometimes the right advice is to wait.

I will always tell you what I believe is in your best interest, even when that answer does not immediately lead to a loan.

That philosophy is the foundation of my business:

Education first. Pressure never.

More Than a Mortgage Transaction

The best mortgage advice considers more than the loan itself.

A mortgage can affect monthly cash flow, taxes, retirement planning, investment strategy, estate goals, and long-term financial flexibility. That is why I often collaborate with real estate professionals, financial advisors, CPAs, attorneys, and family members when appropriate.

Whether someone is purchasing a first home, refinancing an investment property, accessing home equity, financing a commercial building, or exploring a reverse mortgage, I want them to understand both the immediate benefits and the long-term implications.

My goal is not to close one transaction. It is to become a trusted mortgage resource for years to come.

My Personal Story

I am also a father of three amazing children—two daughters and one son—and being their dad is the most important role in my life.

Parenthood has taught me patience, perspective, humility, and the importance of being present. It has also reinforced something I see every day in my work: financial decisions are rarely just about numbers. They are about families, stability, opportunity, and the future people are trying to build.

Outside of work and family, golf has long been one of my greatest passions. I’m an avid golfer and a member of The Saticoy Club. I enjoy the competition, discipline, friendships, and constant pursuit of improvement that come with the game.

Golf also mirrors many of the lessons I have learned in business and life. You prepare carefully, make the best decision available, commit to the shot, and respond constructively when things do not go exactly as planned.

Commitment to Our Community

Ventura County has been my home, my professional base, and the center of many important relationships in my life.

In 2013, I co-founded the Ventura County Charity Golf Tournament. The annual event brings local businesses, golfers, volunteers, and nonprofit organizations together to support charities serving children, families, and individuals throughout our community.

Since its founding, the tournament has helped raise meaningful funds and awareness for local nonprofit organizations. Seeing the community come together for a shared purpose remains one of the most rewarding parts of my life outside of family and work.

I also serve as treasurer for a local nonprofit organization providing licensed treatment and residential sober-living services. That experience has deepened my appreciation for organizations and individuals doing difficult, life-changing work behind the scenes.

Community involvement is not simply something I add to a biography. It is an important part of who I am and how I try to live.

Communication and Personal Growth

I have been an active member of Ventura Sunrise Toastmasters since 2013.

Toastmasters has helped me become a stronger speaker, listener, leader, and communicator. Those skills directly influence how I serve clients. Mortgage financing involves complex concepts, emotional decisions, and significant financial consequences. Being able to explain those issues clearly and respectfully is essential.

I believe personal and professional growth should never stop. Whether I am studying lending guidelines, working on my golf game, improving my health, developing my communication skills, or learning how to better support my children and community, I try to remain curious and continually improve.

What Clients Can Expect

Clients and referral partners can expect me to be:

Experienced
I have worked in mortgage lending since 1997 and have successfully navigated multiple housing cycles, interest-rate environments, and lending markets.

Independent
I have access to a broad range of lenders and programs rather than being restricted to one institution’s offerings.

Responsive
Real estate and lending do not always operate during traditional banking hours. I make myself available when important questions or decisions arise.

Thorough
I review income, assets, credit, property details, goals, and potential risks before recommending a financing strategy.

Creative
When a conventional solution does not fit, I explore alternative structures and lending options.

Honest
I provide direct guidance, including when I believe a client should reconsider, wait, or pursue another approach.

Relationship-focused
My objective is to earn trust and become a long-term resource—not simply complete a single transaction.

Let’s Start With a Conversation

You do not need to know exactly which loan program you need before contacting me.

You may simply have a question:

  • How much home can I comfortably afford?
  • Should I refinance or keep my current mortgage?
  • How can I use home equity more strategically?
  • Would a reverse mortgage improve retirement cash flow?
  • Can I qualify using self-employed or alternative income?
  • How should financing be structured for an investment or commercial property?
  • Is there a solution when a traditional bank has already said no?

Those are the conversations I enjoy most.

I’ll listen, ask questions, explain the available options, and help you determine the next logical step.
